DETROIT - Kmart Corp. executives on Friday debunked a list claiming to detail 565 Kmart store closings that would take place by next year, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The Atlanta Business Chronicle, a part of the American City Business Journals chain, reported it has obtained a list of Kmart stores that could close in January. The report did not say which states could lose stores or how the list was obtained. According to other American City Business Journals, the list includes 40 stores in Florida, 19 in Georgia, four in Kansas and nine in the Dallas and Ft. Worth area.
A Kmart spokesman told Dow Jones that the retailer is in preliminary stages of evaluating its store base, but that a critical factor in the analysis is the year-end sales results of the stores, which won't be known until after the holiday season.
