    FMI Partners with Labor Department for Teen Labor Initiative

    WASHINGTON, DC - The Food Marketing Institute has entered a partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor to educate teenagers and their parents about the laws governing the jobs and hours teens can work, and how to prevent injuries.

    WASHINGTON, DC - The Food Marketing Institute has entered a partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor to promote "YouthRules!" This new DOL initiative is designed to educate teenagers and their parents about the laws governing the jobs and hours teens can work, and how to prevent injuries.

    At a press conference on Wednesday, FMI President and CEO Tim Hammonds joined Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, who announced the partnership with FMI and associations representing other industries that employ teens.

    "For millions of Americans," Hammonds said, "their very first job is in a retail food store. We are proud of the role our industry plays teaching young people good work habits, which will benefit them for the rest of their lives. We want that first job to be both safe and rewarding, and provide a real-world complement to their education in school.

    "FMI will work with our member companies -- which offer job opportunities in 26,000 U.S. stores -- to promote the program among their teenage associates and their families," he said.

    As part of this program, DOL has set up a Web site (www.youthrules.dol.gov), including guides to federal and state labor laws, training materials, and posters and stickers that employers can order.
