Hard-discount grocery retailer Aldi is bolstering its commitment to Texas' largest city as it prepares to open a new distribution center along with its 17th store in the Houston area since planting its flag there a year ago.

Aldi is scheduled to break ground May 1 on a 650,000-square-foot distribution center and division headquarters in Rosenberg, Texas, where it will also cut the ribbon on a new supermarket the same day. The distribution center/HQ, expected to open in early 2016, will bring more than 150 jobs and more than $60 million to the Rosenberg economy.

“Rising demand for Aldi is fueling our significant expansion, including the Houston area,” said Karla Waddleton, Rosenberg division VP. “We are pleased to bring our distribution center and division headquarters to Rosenberg to serve our growing presence in Houston. We are committed to offering ALDI customers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices and building a long lasting relationship with the community of Rosenberg.”

    More Stores, More Jobs

In April 2013, Aldi entered the Houston market and expects to operate 30 new stores there by the end of 2015, bringing some 400 jobs and investing more than $125 million in the Houston metro area.

Aldi recently launched a five-year strategic plan to open 650 new stores across the nation. When the plan is complete, Aldi will have stores coast to coast and anticipates serving more than 45 million customers per month. The expansion will create more than 10,000 new jobs at Aldi stores, warehouses and division offices. The grocer also is planning to invest more than $3 billion to pay for land, facilities and equipment.

To celebrate the opening of the new Rosenberg store, Aldi will host a public ribbon-cutting ceremony on the morning of May 1. Guests will be able to sample Aldi exclusive brands, tour the new store and enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win Aldi gift certificates. The new Rosenberg store features high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials, creating a shopping experience that is simple and easy to navigate.

Batavia, Ill.-based Aldi operates nearly 1,300 stores in 32 states, primarily from Kansas to the East Coast.
