Tops Freezing Prices on 300 Staple Products

Grocer's new pricing promotion a boon for consumers

Tops Markets, Williamsville, N.Y., is introducing a new pricing strategy on Sept. 7 called Price Lock Guarantee that will run until Nov. 1. The chain is implementing the price freeze on more than 300 frequently purchased products in 26 categories and includes national brands as well as Tops brands. The items include Tops eggs and sandwich bread, Tide laundry detergent, Crest toothpaste and Kraft singles cheese. Tops will continue its Best Deals in Town promotion that it runs every week as well as accept coupons for the products included in the Price Lock Guarantee.

After Nov. 1, the chain will retire the price freeze during the holiday months, with a plan to introduce new products to the Price Lock Guarantee Program in January for another 60-day run.

“We are a promotional retailer. Customers love our promotions; they love the things we do,” said Frank Curci, Tops CEO in a Buffalo News article. “But based on our research, customers were saying there were staple items they buy every week that they were looking for additional value so they didn’t have to wait for a sale. This tries to address that.”
