The 2014 Vermont Retail and Grocers Association (VRGA) Person of the Year Awards went to Marcel Marquis, of Shaw's Supermarkets, and Bonnie Hawley, owner of Hawley's Florist, in Rutland. Marquis and Hawley received their awards at the Chairman's Banquet on Sept. 10 during the Montpelier-based trade organization's 2014 Convention & Expo.

"Both Bonnie and Marcel have been active members and participants in the predecessor organizations [Vermont Grocers Association and Vermont Retail Association], and continue to be so with VRGA," said Jim Harrison, the association's president. "Each has a long resume of service to their communities and to their associations."

A retail supermarket industry veteran for more than 35 years, Marquis has been store director for East Bridgewater, Mass.-based Shaw's since May 2010, overseeing 150 associates and responsible for the overall operation of various-volume supermarkets in Vermont. Before that, he was Shaw's district manager in Connecticut and Vermont until restructuring took place four years ago. From 1999 until 2004, Marquis was the chain's human resources director.

The owner and operator of her own business for 37 years, Hawley is active in Rutland's professional and philanthropic communities.
