    Stater Bros. Cuts Energy Use by 50%

    Effort to reduce 315,000 kWH per month chain-wide

    Stater Bros. Markets will reduce its energy use by 50 percent at all 168 of its locations during the next couple of months, the company said. The effort will also result in a reduction in electricity by 315,000 kWH per month.

    “We want our customers to know that we are reducing our store energy usage because we are committed to improving the environment in the communities we serve and live in,” said Jack H. Brown, chairman and CEO of Stater Bros.

    Other environmentally friendly efforts at local Stater Bros. supermarkets include:

    • Closed-door cases and LED lighting on all refrigerated cases, reducing energy by 60 percent per refrigerated case
    • LED lighting on sales floor in newly constructed and remodeled stores
    • “Green Waste” program (removes nearly 40 million pounds of waste from landfills each year)
    • Recycling cardboard (more than 70 million pounds per year)
    • Recycling plastic bags (more than 2.3 million pounds per year)
    • Printing the company’s weekly ad on recycled paper
    • Donating food to local food banks (more than 3 million pounds per year)
    • Energy Management System that controls refrigeration, HVAC, demand response, and lighting
    • Recycling Centers inside each supermarket for customers to recycle paper and plastic grocery bags

    Stater Bros. Markets, based in San Bernardino, Calif., operates 168 supermarekts.
