Orchard Perfect Fruit Returns to Giant-Carlisle, Martin's

A special handling process produces premium ripened summer fruits, according to the Ahold-owned chain.

Giant Food Stores, LLC is once more rolling out its exclusive Orchard Perfect specialty line of summer fruit to Giant Food and Martin's Food Markets customers. The signature program, which the chain has offered for over three years, brings premium ripened fruit directly to stores.

Once the fruit is picked, it's gently placed in single-layer cartons to prevent bruising, the grocer said. This process ensures that the fruit is immediately ready for consumption once it arrives in stores. The line consists of peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots (cross between plums and apricots), white-flesh peaches, and white-flesh nectarines. Peaches and nectarines are in stores now, with plums slated to arrive by the end of June.

"Customers no longer have to wait for their peaches, plums, and nectarines to ripen to perfection," said Giant Food v.p. of produce and floral Jeffrey Beaulieu. "With the Orchard Perfect program, we can offer fruit at the peak of ripeness, so it is as its sweetest and juiciest stage for our customers to enjoy."

After July 4, customers will again be able purchase an Orchard Perfect "perfect pack," a clear plastic container in which eight pieces of fruit can be mixed and matched with added protection to the fruit and additional savings per pound.

New this year, Giant and Martin's have teamed up with East Coast growers to promote "homegrown" peaches and nectarines throughout the local growing season.

Giant Food Stores operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia under Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets and FoodSource banners.
