Pathmark Accepting Entries for 10th Annual Gospel Choir Competition

Sign-ups are now being accepted for the 10th annual Pathmark Gospel Choir Competition, which marks Black History Month by bringing together top choirs to sing their hearts out for $10,000 in prizes. The upcoming event will take place Feb. 27 at the World Financial Center-Winter Garden in New York.

Last year, over 15 choirs from across North America participated in the competition, with the winning team hailing from Montreal, Quebec. Choirs from churches, schools and community organizations are eligible to take part in the contest, which consists of a Youth Division (18 years or younger) and an Open Division.

According to the supermarket chain, which is a banner of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., thousands of local churches support the event, whose rousing music can be heard on television, radio and live on stage.

Space is limited, and the deadline to for groups to enroll is Dec. 31, 2009. Information and applications are available at www.pathmark.com/community_africanAmerican.asp.

In other gospel-tinged A&P news, the grocer has rolled out the “HOLISALEBRATION” program, which it says will bring customers “the lowest prices on all holiday favorites available exclusively at … local A&P, SuperFresh and Waldbaum’s stores,” including meats, fresh seafood, fully prepared dinners and festive platters. To help promote the seasonal savings, the New York Harlem Gospel Singers will star in radio commercials letting consumers know the special deals of the week.

Montvale, N.J.-based A&P operates 435 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum’s, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh and Food Basics.
