Pres. Bush Nominates New Ag Secretary

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Bush nominated the former governor of North Dakota, Edward T Schafer, as the new Agricultural Secretary. A Republican, Schafer succeeds Mike Johanns, who is campaign for a Senate seat in Nebraska.

Acting secretary Chuck Conner said the president's choice in Schafer is a good one in light of his background as governor of an agricultural state such as North Dakota, as well as his understanding of key agricultural issues.

"He is an optimistic, strong leader and will be welcomed by farmers, ranchers and other stakeholders", said Conner.
