We are pleased to invite you to enter Progressive Grocer's 14th Annual Category Captains Awards competition.

For nearly 15 years, Progressive Grocer has pioneered this distinguished industry awards program that recognizes overall excellence in category management, and we're once again looking forward to saluting the benchmark companies whose innovation and commitment to this critical business practice is setting the pace for leadership and vision.

To further enhance our program, we've made a few changes with this year's Category Captains' evaluation process, for which we've enlisted the assistance and expertise of an impartial judging panel comprised of a select and independent group of industry notables that includes retailers, advisors, and marketing executives.

All entries will be evaluated against three important criteria: innovation, delivery of measured results, and feedback from retailers.

Complete Category Captain Awards entry details follow below:

1. Submit a detailed synopsis of new key category management initiatives your company has employed over the last 12 months to accomplish the following crucial objectives:

  • Product differentiation in a given category,
  • Increased sales for those products in that category,
  • Verifiable data illustrating outstanding performance among retail partners resulting in higher sales across the entire category.
All entries must be submitted in a Microsoft Word document of 800 words or less. Entries must include verifiable compelling examples of new programs, technologies, business systems, merchandising schemes and/or promotional tactics that played a key role in your category development objectives.

Should your submission be chosen for recognition, this content will form the basis of a write up discussing your winning program that will appear in the November / December 2009 issue of Progressive Grocer.

2. Submit verifiable comparable market-specific or account-specific sales or market share data that supports your claims about the effectiveness of your category management efforts. Upon request, Progressive Grocer will hold the names of the retailers or markets in question in the strictest confidence.

3. Submit an electronic image of one or more of the products mentioned in your synopsis. Images must be 300.dpi in resolution, in .tif or .jpg format; 4x4 preferable for size.

4. Submit your synopsis on innovation (#1 above,) your results (#2 above,) and relevant art (#3,) no later than July 1, 2009.

Entries lacking all specified criteria will not be considered.

We will devote our November/December 2009 issue to presenting our new slate of Category Captains' award-winning programs to bring supermarket industry executives up to speed on everything they need to know about the future of category management. We encourage you to enter.

If you need assistance, have questions or need clarification, just contact us at categorycaptains@progressivegrocer.com - we'll be happy to help. Good luck!
