Wegmans Food Markets could be moving closer to opening its first Massachusetts location, now that voters at a town meeting in Westwood have given the go-ahead to a beer and wine license for a proposed 140,000-square-foot Wegmans store at the Westwood Station project, according to a published press report.

The proposal, which carried by a 410 to 372 vote, permits Westwood's board of selectmen to petition the state legislature for the beer and wine license.

Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans has said that getting such a license would weigh heavily in its decision to open a store in Westwood. Opponents to the measure, led by Roche Bros. c.e.o. Rick Roche, maintain that granting the license to Wegmans would render the town's Roche Bros. store unable to compete.

Those in favor of the license say that Wegmans would bring jobs to the area.

Massachusetts law currently prohibits a company from selling alcohol at over three retail locations in the state.
