Supervalu's bigg's Closing Cincinnati Mills Store

May 15, 2008

Supervalu's Cincinnati-based bigg's subsidiary will close its 251,000-square-foot store Cincinnati Mills store in June, in a move that will cut the chain's portfolio to 11 units.

The location -- one of its original hypermarkets, which combined food with clothing, household items, and tools - "did not fit into the company's business plans for the future," the chain was quoted as saying in the Cincinnati Business Courier.

Bigg's has reportedly been focusing more intensively on a grocery-centric format including gourmet foods, prepared meals, and expanded wine sections.

Bigg's, which last shuttered a 15-year-old store in Clarksville, Ind., in August 2006, will sell off inventory from the Cincinnati Mills store. The unit's employees were offered positions in its other stores as well as transitional and outplacement services, according to the press report.
