Wal-Mart Said Working on Supercenter Prototype

The retailer is planning a smaller, more upscale Supercenter, and will also launch a new corporate logo, says the Memphis Business Journal.

June 30, 2008

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is reportedly planning a new Supercenter prototype that is smaller and more upscale than the traditional Supercenter units it has opened in most regions of the country.

The retailer is proposing to build a new Supercenter format in Cordova, Tenn., which would probably be the first of the new prototype in the state, according to a report in the Memphis Business Journal.

A recent application submitted to the Office of Planning and Development indicated the store would be 151,908 square feet, according to the local newspaper. It would feature a new logo with "Walmart" in white letters on an orange background, accompanied by a white starburst. Documents also show a new corporate logo with blue letters followed by an orange starburst.

Wal-Mart's new corporate logo will officially be unveiled next week, a company spokesman told the Memphis Business Journal.

Meanwhile, the new Supercenter will feature new department titles, less signage, curved lines, and earth-tone colors, the spokesman said, calling the store "more upscale." In addition, it will showcase some of the green building elements that Wal-Mart has been testing in other energy-efficient Supercenter prototypes.

The spokesman told the newspaper Wal-Mart has submitted plans for building new Supercenter prototype stores to a handful of municipalities around the country.

Wal-Mart has faced opposition in the Memphis area in the past over its plans for building a full-sized Supercenter.
