Kroger Pumps Up Fuel Discount Rewards Program

Oct 1, 2009

The Kroger Co. is enhancing its fuel discount program in the Cincinnati/Dayton, Ohio, marketing area with an upgraded rewards program.

Customers can earn a 10 cents-per-gallon discount by spending $100 or more on groceries, spending $50 or more on Kroger’s gift-card selection, or filling two or more prescriptions at a Kroger pharmacy. The upgraded program also expands to 1,000 the amount of points a customer can earn by buying gift cards and getting prescriptions filled.

Initially available at 15 Kroger stores in the Cincinnati/Dayton market, and three Indiana locations, Kroger’s enhanced fuel rewards discount program also offers an additional five-cents-per-gallon discount for shoppers who pay at the pump with the retailer’s proprietary 1-2-3 Rewards MasterCard.

Customer reward points appear at the bottom of receipts, and there’s no limit on the number of points that can be earned. However, there is a 1,000-point limit for use with a single fuel fill-up, with any remaining points rolled over for use at a later time. Customers not using a 1-2-3 Rewards MasterCard can get up to $1 off per gallon of fuel (1,000 points), while customers who use the card can receive up to $1.05 off per gallon of fuel (1,000 points, and five cents per gallon with the 1-2-3 Rewards MasterCard). Further, points earned during the current month are available for use through the end of the next month.

Cincinnati-based Kroger operates more than 2,400 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states.

Against a trying backdrop of persistently weak economic conditions, fierce competition and financially wary shoppers, supermarket produce departments faced much harsher headwinds during the past 12- month period than they have in recent years, as evidenced by marginal comparable-sales gains and a tentative outlook for the balance of the year, according to results of Progressive Grocer's 2009 Annual Produce Operations Review.
