Loblaw's Bagless Initiative Spreads to Alberta
June 24, 2008
The continuing efforts of Loblaw Cos., Ltd. to show its sustainable
side led to the conversion of the Real Canadian Superstore in
Airdrie, Alta. to a bagless location, the first such bagless Loblaw
banner store in Alberta - and the fifth in Canada.
The other bagless locations are in Milton, Ont.; Langford, B.C.;
Sherbrooke, Que.; and Halifax, N.S.
In April 2007 Loblaw made a commitment to reduce 1 billion plastic
grocery bags from Canada's landfills within one year.
"As the largest grocery retailer in Alberta and Canada, we have a
duty to help reduce the volume of waste in our communities," said
Loblaw executive chairman Galen G. Weston. "Opening this store free
from traditional plastic bags at the checkouts is a positive step
towards a greener environment."
Loblaw, Canada's largest food distributor and a leading provider of
general merchandise, drug store and financial products and
services, employs over 140,000 full-time and part-time employees.
