Wegmans Expands Bagel Recall

Sept 15, 2008

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. has widened its recall of store-made bagels and bialys first issued last week because of the possible presence of metal fragments in the food. The recall now encompasses challah bread and in-store baked bagels, bialys and rolls sold in Wegmans' bakery departments between June 19 and Sept. 11.

Wegmans said it launched the recall because a metal spring from a mixer might have entered the dough, which is made at Wegmans' Central Bakeshop, posing a possible choking hazard. The problem was discovered when a customer complained.

Further investigation by the grocer led it to expand the dates and products included in the original recall.

To date, there have been no reported injuries related to the consumption of the items, Wegmans said.

The recalled products are the Wegmans Kaiser Rolls 6-Pack, Wegmans Sub Rolls 6-Pack, Wegmans Old-Fashioned Dinner Rolls 12-Pack, Wegmans Wheat Rolls 6-Pack, Wegmans Challah Rolls 6-Pack, Wegmans Old-Fashioned Vienna Rolls 6-Pack, individually sold Wegmans Mini Kaiser Rolls, Wegmans Challah Bread, individually sold bagels and bialys, and six-packs of Cinnamon Raisin, Assorted, Plain Sesame, and Honey Wheat bagels.

This recall doesn't involve packaged breads and rolls sold in the commercial bakery section of Wegmans' stores, the section where Wegmans and national brand packaged breads/rolls are sold. Also not part of the recall are Wegmans bagels sold in the dairy or frozen food departments.

The recalled products were available at Wegmans stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland. The company estimated about 100,000 cases of bagels, rolls, and challah bread were affected the recall, although it also said it suspected only a very small percentage of the products might actually contain metal fragments.

Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.

Against a trying backdrop of persistently weak economic conditions, fierce competition and financially wary shoppers, supermarket produce departments faced much harsher headwinds during the past 12- month period than they have in recent years, as evidenced by marginal comparable-sales gains and a tentative outlook for the balance of the year, according to results of Progressive Grocer's 2009 Annual Produce Operations Review.
