Wegmans Issues Bagel Recall on Metal Fragments

Sept 11, 2008

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. said it is recalling all varieties of its in-store made bagels and bialys sold in the bakery and bought between Aug. 24 and Sept. 9, 2008, because the products might contain pieces of a metal spring from a mixer that entered the dough at Wegmans' Central Bakeshop in Rochester.

Three customer complaints alerted Wegmans to the problem, the chain said.

Wegmans said the recall does not involve its packaged bagels in the dairy or frozen food departments. It also said it had received no reports of injuries in connection with the consumption of the products.

The recall includes all possible dates when the dough may have been used to make bagels in stores. The bagels were available at Wegmans' stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.

The grocer estimated that about 1,011 cases of potentially affected bagels were produced, which it said was a tiny fraction of all bagels produced and sold during this period.

Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
