T&T to Open its 2nd Edmonton Location

T&T Supermarket, Inc., Canada’s leading Asian supermarket chain will open its second Edmonton, Alberta, location and 17th store July 2 in North Towne Center.

The grand opening ceremony will feature a variety of Asian cultural traditions, including the distribution of lucky red envelopes from the God of Fortune, a performance from a Philippine dance troupe, a lion-dotting ceremony and a traditional lion dance Performance. The festivities will additionally include a ribbon cutting, speeches from community leaders and special gifts for guests. The roughly 45,00-square-foot store officially opens to the public at 10 a.m.

T&T aims to provide Asian families with favorite and familiar foods, while introducing the broad range of Asian cuisines to Canada’s multicultural society.

Against a trying backdrop of persistently weak economic conditions, fierce competition and financially wary shoppers, supermarket produce departments faced much harsher headwinds during the past 12- month period than they have in recent years, as evidenced by marginal comparable-sales gains and a tentative outlook for the balance of the year, according to results of Progressive Grocer's 2009 Annual Produce Operations Review.

Total supermarket sales were $430.3 billion, up $13.2 billion from the $417.2 billion recorded in 2007 -- continuing the trend of slightly higher percentage increases in each of the past five years, according to Progressive Grocer's 62nd Annual Consumer Expenditures Study (CES), now greatly expanded from the eight-page print edition to 35 pages of research.
