Shrimp, Canned Tuna Lead NFI's Top 10 Most Popular List

July 23, 2008

Nearly all of the most popular seafood varieties consumed in the United States held their respective positions on the National Fisheries Institute's "Top 10" list for 2007.

While both shrimp and canned tuna recorded slight decreases in consumption, they retained the number one and two positions. Tilapia consumption continued to grow in the U.S., and has increased by 330 percent since 2000.

The only movement on the list came when scallops were bumped from the top 10 by flatfish, as the battle for the last spot on the list continued for a third year.

NFI's top 10 seafoods as measured by pounds per capita consumption in 2007, in order, are shrimp, 4.10 pounds; canned tuna, 2.70; salmon, 2.36; Pollock, 1.73; tilapia, 1.14; catfish, 0.88; crab, 0.68; cod, 0.46; clams, 0.45; flatfish, 0.32.

The Top 10 list is compiled for the National Fisheries Institute by H.M. Johnson & Associates, publishers of the Annual Report on the United States Seafood Industry. Data for this list came from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
