Winn-Dixie Names New Pharmacy, Development, Real Estate Execs

July 21, 2008

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. said new executive leadership has joined its pharmacy, development, and real estate departments to roll up their sleeves and get cracking on the grocer’s ongoing turnaround efforts.

In one of the appointments, John Fegan has filled the position of v.p. of pharmacy. He will oversee the day-to-day and strategic operations of the Jacksonville, Fla.-based chain’s more than 400 pharmacy locations, and report to s.v.p. and chief merchandising and marketing officer Dan Portnoy.

Before joining Winn-Dixie, Fegan honed his skills at Ahold USA, which runs pharmacy locations under the banners American Drug Stores, Pay’n Save Drug Stores, Gray Drug, and Osco Drug.

Winn-Dixie’s new c.p. of real estate is Peter Thomas, responsible for the development of the grocer’s new store capital and remodel initiatives. Thomas will work to increase market share within Winn-Dixie’s footprint.

Thomas’ career included time at Big Y Foods, Inc., Purity Supreme Supermarkets, A&P, and McCarty-Holman Jitney Jungle.

Dan Tobin joined Winn-Dixie as v.p. of development, with responsibilities including new store design and remodel initiatives. Prior to joining Winn-Dixie, Tobin held key positions at Albertsons and later at Brinker International, Inc., where he oversaw construction activities for renowned casual-dining chains such as Chili’s, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, On The Border Grill & Cantina, and Maggiano’s Little Italy.

Both Thomas and Tobin report to Winn-Dixie’s g.v.p. of development Philip Pichulo, will play a major role in the company’s capital expenditure initiative and succession planning.

Winn-Dixie Stores operates 521 retail grocery locations, including more than 400 in-store pharmacies, in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and Mississippi.
