Meijer to Replace First Supercenter Unit

The Midwest supercenter pioneer’s inaugural site will now be reborn as its first new store in the Grand Rapids city limits in a decade.

July 7, 2008

Pending approval from the town fathers, Meijer Inc. will replace its oldest original supercenter with a new store that will become the retailer’s first new unit in Grand Rapids’ city limits in 11 years.

The chaion said it intends to keep the original open while it builds a new store adjacent to it, slated to open in 2010.

The site was christened as a 17,000-square-foot grocery store in 1958. It became Meijer’s first supercenter in 1962, with an addition of 75,000 square feet to house non-grocery items.

The new project must first clear approval by the city, but local leaders are supportive of the plan.
