Weis Completes 90-Day/$9.99 Prescription Plan Rollout

Oct 6, 2008

Weis Markets has completed the chainwide rollout of its new prescription plan offering a 90-day supply of more than 350 generic prescriptions for $9.99. Originally introduced in 59 pharmacy locations in central and northeast Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Elmira, N.Y., the plan is now available in all of Weis Markets' 118 in-store pharmacies.

"Increasing healthcare and prescription costs remain a huge issue for our customers and their employers," said David J. Hepfinger, president and c.o.o. for the Sunbury, Pa.-based regional grocer. "Our generic prescription plan offers strong savings and gives more choices to physicians and customers such as state and federal employees who are often limited to mail order."

Jeff Maltese, the company's v.p. of pharmacy, said the 90-day generic prescription plan is a "best of both worlds" offer, with "low prices in a full service retail pharmacy, where patients overwhelming prefer to have their prescriptions filled. Pharmacists in the retail setting are uniquely positioned to offer personal pharmaceutical care and medication management, something that's difficult to do with mail order."

Weis Markets new prescription plan covers a variety of generic and antibiotic medicines used to treat allergies, asthma, arthritis, cholesterol, diabetes and digestive ailments, as well as one of the newest generic drugs to hit the market, Altace, which is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure.

In addition to 155 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia, Weis Markets also owns and operates SuperPetz, a pet supply superstore chain with 28 locations in nine states.
