Sleek new packaging is helping Crystal Light, a brand of Northfield, Ill.-based Kraft Foods, set itself apart on grocery store shelves. The powdered beverage mix’s new design features a fresh logo and an innovative canister configuration that makes the product even simpler to use. Additional attributes include easy-open packets, a new 1-quart packet size in the 8-quart canister that helps people prepare the amount they want, and a clear window on the front of the canister to show when packets are running low. Beyond the new look, however, Crystal Light is committed to helping the environment: In total, on a finished-case-goods basis, the new design will use 250 tons fewer packaging each annually. The suggested retail price is $3.29 for the 8-quart canister and $4.59 for the 10- or 12-quart size. With most of its 28 flavors containing just five calories per serving, the Crystal line of naturally and artificially sweetened is available in a range of convenient forms, including both single- and multi-serve packets. Against a trying backdrop of persistently weak economic conditions, fierce competition and financially wary shoppers, supermarket produce departments faced much harsher headwinds during the past 12- month period than they have in recent years, as evidenced by marginal comparable-sales gains and a tentative outlook for the balance of the year, according to results of Progressive Grocer's 2009 Annual Produce Operations Review.

Total supermarket sales were $430.3 billion, up $13.2 billion from the $417.2 billion recorded in 2007 -- continuing the trend of slightly higher percentage increases in each of the past five years, according to Progressive Grocer's 62nd Annual Consumer Expenditures Study (CES), now greatly expanded from the eight-page print edition to 35 pages of research.
