New Walmart Workers Group Issues Video

April 26, 2009

Walmart Workers for Change, a new campaign claiming to represent thousands of the Bentonville, Ark.-based mega-retailer’s 1.3 million associates across the United States, has released a new video discussing what it calls the “anti-worker tactics” employed by the company.

Under the campaign, employees in over 100 stores in 15 states have signed union representation cards, alleging a lack of respect from the company, in addition to low wages and inadequate benefits as reasons to become unionized.

Associates involved in the campaign say were moved to work for unionization by the election of Barack Obama to the U.S. presidency and the introduction of the Employee Free Choice Act in Congress.

In the new video, http://www.walmartworkersforchange.org/index.php/pages/articles/walmarts_war_on_workers, 10 workers detail the company’s response to their organizing efforts. Dominique Sloan and Mark Moore of Dallas said they were told that their store would close if workers voted to organize. Cheryl Guzman of Miami said she was interrogated by a manager about who among her colleagues supported a union. Linda Haluska of Glendale, Ill., said she had to attend four meetings in one week, during which she and her co-workers were shown anti-union, anti-Employee Free Choice videos.

Walmart officials were unavailable for comment at press time.

Walmart Workers for Change is a project of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), which represents 1.3 million workers nationwide, nearly 1 million of them in the supermarket industry.
