Hiller’s Helps Fight Autism

June 30, 2009

In July and August, the seven Hiller’s Markets locations are support the local chapter of Celebrities Against Autism by offering Puzzle Pieces for sale at checkout for $1. All raised will go toward the organization, which offers practical support and guidance to families coping with the condition.

“Every 20 minutes, another family receives the life-changing diagnosis that their child is autistic,” said Val McFarland, president and founder of Celebrities Against Autism in Michigan. “CAA was founded by two Michigan moms who have loved ones affected by this devastating neurological disorder. Our mission is to promote autism awareness and generate much-needed revenue to assist as many families as possible.”

According to McFarland Michigan is one of the states where many insurance policies don’t cover autism treatment. “Together Hiller’s Markets, Celebrities Against Autism and you can make a difference!” she noted. “One out of 94 boys is affected by autism.”

CAA is a Michigan spinoff of the national effort launched by actors Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey. McCarthy is the mother of an autistic son.

Southfield, Mich.-based Hiller’s Markets operates seven stores in the southeastern part of the state. The grocer’s other philanthropic efforts include its active Scrip card program, hosting or participating in specialty food fairs serving niche markets like gluten-free consumers, and collaborations with such nonprofits as ALS of Michigan, Jewish National Fund and Gleaners Food Bank.
