Schnucks to Host Summer Melon Class

June 9, 2009

Regional grocer Schnuck Food Markets and Los Alamitos, Calif.-based produce wholesaler Frieda’s will host a day-long “Frieda’s Produce University” June 20 at all Schnucks and Logli locations in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi, to educate consumers about gourmet summer melons.

“Nothing says summer like sweet, refreshing melon, and our produce managers are eager to share their knowledge about these fine varieties,” said Mike O'Brien, VP of produce at St. Louis-based Schnucks. “Frieda’s Produce University is an excellent opportunity for our produce teams to offer their expertise, and a great way to introduce fresh new foods to our shoppers.”

The eight-hour session will teach shoppers new ways to prepare melons ranging from appetizers to salads to desserts, and will feature six specialty U.S.-grown melon varieties from program partner Sandstone Marketing of Yuma, Ariz: French Kiss, Golden Kiss, Hami Gold, Piel de Sapo, Crenshaw, and Orange Flesh melons.

Schnucks operates more than 100 stores in the states of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
