Giant-Landover’s Lottery Commission Goes to Feed Hungry

June 4, 2009

Giant Food, LLC has donated a $100,000 commission it received from the D.C. Lottery to the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB). The store at 1535 Alabama Avenue in southeast Washington, D.C., sold the winning the winning Powerball jackpot ticket on April 8.
“Over the years Giant has been wonderful to the Food Bank, and this generous donation to the capital campaign is particularly needed to help us achieve our vision for the future during these turbulent economic times,” said CAFB president and CEO Lynn Brantley.

The food bank’s “Til No One Is Hungry” capital campaign raises funds to help it meet the needs of those in need of its services in the Washington metropolitan area. Giant Food’s $100,000 donation will support the renovation and construction of a larger food distribution center that will enable the CAFB to distribute twice as much food through its network of 700 member agencies, increase the quality and nutritional value of that food, and expand its nutrition education and outreach programming. Giant Food has contributed over $430,000 to date to the campaign.

“The Capital Area Food Bank is an essential resource to fight hunger locally, so donating the $100,000 to them was an easy choice,” said Kim Brown, VP of public affairs and community relations for Landover, Md.-based Giant Food.”

The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest public, nonprofit food and nutrition education resource in the D.C. area.

A division of Ahold USA, Giant Food operates 182 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, and employs approximately 22,000 associates. Included within the 182 stores are 164 full-service pharmacies.
