Big Y World Class Market Opens in Torrington, Conn.

May 15, 2008

:Big Y is opening an all-new World Class Market in Torrington, Conn. at 504 Winsted Road today. Although the Springfield, Mass.-grocer has operated in the area since 1988, when it acquired the former Greenfield's Supermarket in the same shopping center in 1988, the grocer said it has "completely outgrown" the 53,000-square-foot site, which was last renovated nine years ago.

Construction on the new, 67,640-square-foot location began last August and cost about $7.5 million, according to Big Y. Additionally, the chain hired over 50 new employees to work at the new supermarket.

"We are the only supermarket in the area with easy access on and off Route 8, and we know that our customers will enjoy the ease and convenience of our open layout, the selection and quality of our fresh foods, and the variety and value our new store has to offer," said Big Y president and c.o.o. Charles L. D'Amour.

Features include an exclusively full-service fresh meat department offering USDA Choice Big Y All Natural Angus Beef, Hormel Always Tender Pork, USDA Choice American Veal and Lamb, and air-chilled Smart Chicken available daily from Big Y's trained butchers; an International Food Court with restaurant-style seating and a large selection of hot and cold prepared foods; local produce whenever possible; a full-service floral department; extensive deli and bakery departments; organic items across the store; specialty foods from around the world; and an in-store pharmacy.

Family-owned and -operated Big Y, one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, operates 57 stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,800 employees.
