US Consumers Concerned About Food Safety

JULY 01, 2009 -- A new study by IBM reveals that less than 20 percent of U.S. consumers trust food companies to develop and sell food products that are safe and healthy, and that 60 percent are concerned about the safety of the food they purchase.
The survey of 1,000 consumers in the 10 largest cities nationwide also showed that 63 percent of respondents have purposefully changed their grocery shopping behaviors over the past two years to get more value for their money. Almost half have changed shopping behavior to access fresher foods (45 percent) and better quality (43 percent).
The study said 83 percent of respondents could name a food product that was recalled over the past two years due to contamination or other safety concerns. 49 percent said they would be less likely to purchase a food product again if it was recalled due to contamination, while 63 percent said they would not buy it until the contamination source had been found and addressed. Eight percent said they would never purchase the food again – regardless.
The survey found that 77 percent want more information about the content of the food products they purchase, and 76 percent want more information about its origin.
According to the study, 55 percent trust food manufacturers when handling a recall, and 72 percent trust the store where they buy groceries to properly handle food product contamination recalls. 57 percent said they’ve stopped purchasing certain foods, even for a short time, within the past two years because of safety concerns.
