DVD Rental Kiosks Gain Popularity
SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 --
The Kroger Co. has announced that it will expand its agreement with Coinstar to plays the company’s Redbox fully automated DVD rental kiosks to more than 2,600 of the company’s supermarkets and convenience stores over the next year.
Kroger currently offers the Redbox DVD kiosks in more than 200 locations. The expansion is due to be completed in 2010.
In May, the Circle K convenience store chain based in Oakbrook Terrace, IL, said it would expand the presence of Redbox throughout its network of stores located in 30 states nationwide.
Each Redbox kiosk holds about 700 DVDs representing up to 200 of the newest movie releases, according to the company. Consumers use a touch screen to select their movies, swipe a debit or credit card, and go. They may keep the DVD as long as they like for $1 per night plus tax and return it to any one of more than 15,000 locations nationwide. After 25 nights, rental charges cease and customers may keep the DVD.
