Publix Opens 2nd GreenWise Market

Publix Super Markets Inc. yesterday opened its second Publix GreenWise Market, in Boca Raton, Fla., with offerings very much like the first GreenWise that opened in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. in September 2007.

Publix also said yesterday that the third Publix GreenWise Market is set to open in Tampa, at the northeast corner of Armenia & Azeele streets, in late 2008.

In the Boca Raton unit, the service meat department features 28 feet of fresh products, including more than 20 varieties of sausages made in-house, and ready-to-cook products. The assortment includes meat that was raised antibiotic-free, andor has no added hormones. A temperature- and humidity-controlled, dry-aged meat cabinet is available to customers to age meat.

Unique to the Boca Raton location is a grill that will offer product samples daily, the retailer said.

The seafood department offers wild and farmed-raised varieties of fresh fish, as well as an extensive variety of shellfish options, including lobsters. All seafood adheres to standards of no preservatives, no additives, and no antibiotics, Publix said. Sushi is available and made with organic brown rice.

The GreenWise format also offers an expanded produce department, with both organic and conventionally grown fruits and vegetables; a dedicated organic processing area; and a floral department with a cooler.

The grocer said the Publix GreenWise Market is certified by Quality Certification Services (QCS). To reduce the store's ozone depleting substances, the store uses environmentally-friendly secondary coolant systems and refrigerants. LED lighting is used in refrigerated cases, coolers, and freezers.

The roof is covered with a solar panel system designed to absorb heat and cut down on the store's energy use. A 42-inch flat screen monitor displays how much energy the solar panel is producing at any given time, in full view of customers.

Publix said it used renewable resources whenever possible in the new store's construction, including bamboo and reclaimed and recycled metal in the decor and sales fixtures.
