Publix Postpones Plans for DC in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix Super Markets, Inc. has decided to postpone development plans for a distribution center in Punta Gorda, Fla., and is now seeking an Orlando-area site to better serve stores in the area.

The land in Punta Gorda, located on Piper Road near Interstate Highway 75 and the Jones Loop Road corridor, will remain a Publix-owned site, the retailer said.

Publix employs approximately 1,100 associates in its eight Charlotte County stores: four in Port Charlotte, two in Punta Gorda, one in Englewood, and one in Placida.

"Since our first discussions, we implemented a streamlined inventory process and further analyzed our transportation patterns. That influenced our decision to discontinue with immediate plans for the center," said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations, in a statement. "As we continued to analyze the supply and demand needs of our stores, we determined a central location was best for our next distribution center. Being near the Orlando area will allow our fleet to serve our stores more efficiently and cost effectively."

An exact location for the Orlando-area site has not been confirmed. The company currently operates seven distribution centers in Florida.
