Raley's Exec Charles Collings Dies

Charles "Chuck" Collings, a 50-year veteran with West Sacramento, Calif.-based Raley’s Family of Fine Stores, died this past Saturday of prolonged health problems.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Collings began as a bagger and then manager of a small grocery store in Oklahoma. After serving three years in the Navy during World War II, he worked for a meatpacker and then as a department manager at a Montgomery Ward store in Oakland.

In 1956 he was recruited by Raley’s founder Tom Raley to join the grocer’s management team, and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming president in 1969 and CEO in 1992. He retired in 1998, but stayed on the company's board for several years afterward.
