Albertson’s, LLC Sells Fla. DC to Gordon Foodservice

Albertson’s, LLC, which according to published reports is closing eight underperforming Florida stores, has sold its Plant City, Fla., distribution center to Gordon Food Service (GFS). The 1-million-square-foot DC occupies a 158-acre site in Hillsborough County, off Interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando, Fla.

“This facility is in a prime location to support our rapid growth in Florida,” said Jim Gordon, president of Grand Rapids, Mich.-based GFS. “We expect to begin shipping to our customers in central Florida from Plant City in the fall of 2010. Our Miami distribution center will continue to serve all of our southern Florida customers as well as our cruise and international customers. Our Ocala distribution center will continue to serve select chain customers.”

When operating at full capacity, the Plant City DC will employ over 350 people, noted the town’s mayor, Rick Lott, who called GFS’ investment in the community and promise of job creation “a welcome boost to the local economy.”

The Plant City facility will be GFS’ 12th distribution center in the United States and its third in Florida. Currently, the company operates two distribution centers each in Grand Rapids and Brighton, Mich.; and one each in Springfield, Ohio; Shepherdsville, Ky.; Greenville, S.C.; Pottsville, Pa.; and Ocala and Miami, Fla. Additionally, a new distribution center in Kenosha, Wis., will begin operations in March 2010.

North America’s largest family-owned and managed broadline foodservice distributor, GFS distributes to foodservice operators throughout the Midwest and along the entire East Coast of the United States, and coast to coast in Canada. The company also operates 132 GFS Marketplace retail stores.

Privately owned, Boise, Idaho-based Albertson’s, LLC operates over 240 stores under the Albertsons banner in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Texas.
