Aldi Eyes Pittsburgh for Distribution Warehouse
PITTSBURGH - German-owned discount retailer Aldi is considering the Pittsburgh market for a 400,000-square-foot distribution warehouse, the Pittsburgh Business Times reports.
Sources estimated that the project could cost more than $20 million, and would help Aldi expand its retail presence in the region.
Brian McGee, director of real estate for ALDI, told the Pittsburgh Business Times the company was considering building a warehouse that would serve 16 stores in Western Pennsylvania, among others.
"We're still just in the evaluation process," he said. "More than likely, we'll commit to do a warehouse here. We'd commit to a lot more stores if we choose to do a warehouse."
A decision could be made next spring, McGee said.
Aldi has been looking at sites for roughly nine months, and needs 100 acres of flat land for the warehouse, sources said.
The owners of Aldi, billionaires Theo and Karl Albrecht, also own Trader Joe's, the fast-growing California-based specialty food retailer that also has been scouting Pittsburgh locations. In addition, they own a minority stake in Albertson's.
