A&P Leads Intro of UTC Power's Clean-air Technology

MONTVALE, N.J. -- A&P's Mount Kisco, N.Y. location has become the first U.S. supermarket to install UTC Power's PureComfort 240M combined cooling, heating, and power system.

At a ribbon-cutting event held yesterday, local and federal government officials were on hand to celebrate the installation of this 240-kilowatt system designed to provide highly efficient and clean electricity, cooling, and heating for the store.

"This event recognizes the value of partnerships dedicated to technological innovation between government and business," said Douglas L. Faulkner, principal deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy, U.S. Department of Energy. "The use of technology to improve efficiency is a key objective of President Bush's energy plan, and public/private partnerships like this one can be the model for others as we work together to secure America/s energy future."

Chuck McCutchan, president of the A&P banner group, said, "Our new Mount Kisco fresh store demonstrates our company's commitment to providing the best food-shopping experience for our customers and their families. We also are proud to serve our community by employing this excellent technology to make more efficient use of energy, and to protect the environment by minimizing emissions."

"A&P's use of the PureComfort 240M as an innovative power system confirms that our UTC Power solutions provide economic, environmental, and social benefits," noted UTC Power president Jan van Dokkum. "We're honored to have A&P as the system's launch supermarket customer, and look forward to many more successes in this sector."

The PureComfort system converts more than 80 percent of its fuel input to useful electric, cooling, and heating output. This high efficiency is expected to produce 40 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions and 90 percent fewer nitrogen oxide emissions than those of the average central generation plant. The nitrogen oxide emissions avoided annually are equal to those produced by 250 cars during the same time period, while the carbon dioxide emissions benefit is equivalent to planting 150 acres of forest.

The system gains its high efficiency by using the exhaust heat generated from power production to provide additional heating and cooling for the store. The technology was developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy.

A&P operates 650 stores in 10 states, the District of Columbia, and Ontario, Canada, under the trade names A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh, Farmer Jack, Sav-A-Center, Dominion, The Barn Markets, Food Basics, and Ultra Food & Drug.
