A&P Raises $230,189 for MDA

MONTVALE, N.J. -- The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. here said yesterday that it had raised what it called "an unprecedented" $230,189 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the "Shamrocks Against Dystrophy" campaign, which ran from Feb. 26th through March 18th.

The company’s "Family of Supermarkets" -- A&P, Food Emporium, Super Fresh, Farmer Jack, Waldbaum's, Sav-A-Center, and Food Basics -- all participated in the program. At a ceremony A&P president and c.e.o. Eric Claus presented a check for amount raised to Peter Kearney and his son, Kevin. The Kearneys are a family served by the MDA.

"Our various banners have conducted the Shamrock campaign
individually for as many as 20 years, some banners for more, some for less," A&P spokeswoman Patti Councill told Progressive Grocer. "This is the first year the banners participated collectively."

"We appreciate the efforts of our associates on behalf of MDA and the generosity of our customers," the retailer said in a statement.
