Area Charities Divide $1 Million-plus ShopRite Donation

MONTVALE, N.J. - A ShopRite golf tournament has yielded over $1 million in donations that will be shared by 38 local charities, said Wakefern Food Corp. yesterday.

Funds raised by the event, the Sybase Classic Presented by ShopRite, will go to hospitals, food banks, educational institutions and other agencies, said Joe Colalillo, chairman and c.e.o. of Wakefern.

"In a golf tournament, it takes four days to determine a champion," said Colalillo, "but walk into a food bank or a homeless shelter or a children's hospital, and you can see the champions immediately -- the staff and volunteers who do so much for so many."

ShopRite became presenting sponsor of the event this year. The tournament was held in May at the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J. The winner, Lorena Ochoa, the No. 1 woman's golfer in the world, also won the Sybase Classic in 2006.

This donations continues ShopRite's longtime association with the LPGA. Since the 1980s, the banner has donated over $20 million to charities through sponsoring LPGA events.

The ShopRite Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey, will administer the donations. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that manages 800 charitable funds representing $180 million in assets.

ShopRite supermarkets are members of Wakefern Food Corp., a retailer-owned cooperative with stores in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware. The banner serves over 4 million customers weekly.
