Asda to Close E-commerce Warehouses
LONDON - U.K. supermarket chain Asda plans to begin fulfilling its Internet orders through its existing stores, rather than by operating separate warehouses for its online shoppers, according to The Independent newspaper.
Asda has said it will close two storage facilities in Watford and Croydon, both in southeast England. The two centers were opened in 1999 and have been used to service online customers.
Asda already fills online orders in other areas of the UK at local stores, where employees walk the aisles picking products.
According to The Independent, Asda hopes to offer online ordering to 14 million households by the end of 2002--compared with 8.4 million now.
