AWG Buying Affiliated Foods Assets

Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc. (AWG) of Kansas City, Kan., is buying many of the assets of Affiliated Foods Southwest (AFS) of Little Rock, Ark., the latter of which filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, along with closing a warehouse in Little Rock, Ark.

According to local press reports, AWG will also begin servicing many of Affiliated’s former customers and is interviewing former Affiliated employees for positions with AWG.

“AWG’s offer provides the best opportunity for independent retailers throughout Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana to grow their business and meet the needs of their customers,” Jerry Garland, AWG’s president and CEO, was quoted as saying. “AWG’s resources will be focused on providing the retailers a smooth transition with little disruption in product availability.”

AWG operates distribution centers in Memphis, Fort Worth, Texas, Oklahoma City and Springfield, Mo. The co-op will service former Affiliated stores from the nearest center.

AWG, which supplies more than 1,800 independent supermarkets in 21 states, is the second largest retailer-owned wholesale co-op in the nation.
