Beef Checkoff Launches On-Pack Nutrition Labeling Guide

The Beef Checkoff Program unveiled an on-pack nutrition labeling implementation guide to help retailers execute its marketing program in their stores.

The on-pack labeling implementation guide shows grocers how to best communicate nutrition information on beef cuts, including what information should be included, resources to identify accurate beef nutrition information, dual declaration labels for ground beef, and staff training.

"Research shows that consumers are overwhelmingly interested in consuming foods with health benefits and are making strides to improve the healthfulness of their diets," said Randy Irion, director of channel marketing for NCBA, which is contracted to manage retail programs for the beef checkoff.

Irion said on-pack meat nutrition labeling is an effective way for retailers to meet that customer need and differentiate themselves from competitors.

A 2006 beef checkoff-funded research study with Marsh Supermarkets, Inc. found that on-pack nutrition labeling programs and supporting materials can build awareness, provide valuable nutrition education, and increase customer loyalty.
