Big Y Puts Registered Dietitian on Staff

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Big Y Foods, Inc. here is fortifying its strategy to help shoppers make sensible nutrition and lifestyle decisions by adding a registered dietitian to its staff.

The dietitian, Carrie Taylor, will contribute to a bimonthly newsletter, "Living Well Eating Smart," which the Southern New England grocer has designed to cover a broad range of health topics. The first issue, out this month, features weight management, diabetes concerns, USDA's MyPyramid guidelines, new products, recipes, and a special section for kids, among other information. Upcoming issues will deal with such concerns as healthy holiday eating, healthy Super Bowl snacking, American Heart Month in February, children's cuisine, breakfast ideas and more.

"The No. 1 request I have from clients is to help them navigate through the grocery store," noted Taylor. "'Living Well Eating Smart' is a wonderful way for me to provide this service to thousands of people."

Taylor will provide additional consumer information via Big Y's weekly sales circular and its Web site, http://www.bigy.com. To ensure that customers can easily find the products mentioned in her columns, each Big Y supermarket will highlight those items in a special section. As well as being available to the press for comments on nutritional topics, Taylor will answer consumer questions sent by e-mail and regular mail.

Taylor is a registered dietitian through the American Dietetic Association and a licensed dietitian in the state of Massachusetts, and most recently served as lead nutrition educator for the University of Massachusetts Extension Food Stamp Program in Fall River.

Family-owned and -operated Big Y operates 54 stores throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut and has more than 8,500 employees.
