Bigg's Coffee Bar Partner Shutters In-store Operations

Bigg's supermarket is no longer offering in-store coffee and tea bars, because it's partner in the venture, Awakenings Coffee & Tea, has pulled out.

The 12-store, Cincinnati-based Supervalu retail subsidiary will use the vacant space in one store to expand its floral shop, but has not yet decided on what it will do with the available space in its other stores, Bigg's spokeswoman Brandi Smith was quoted as saying in local press reports.

The Bigg's/Awakenings partnership took flight in 2005 with the opening of a shop in Bigg's Hyde Park Plaza store in Oakley. The following year, the locally owned, Cincy-based coffee chain expanded to Biggs stores in Florence, Newtown and Mason. It closed the shop in the Florence store in 2007.
