BJ's November Same-Store Sales Up 8.4 Percent

NATICK, Mass. - BJ's Wholesale Club Inc.'s November same-store sales went up 8.4 percent, less than the 9.7 percent growth analysts had predicted, as strong sales in the first half of the month stalled in the second half, according to Dow Jones Business News.

In a press release today, the warehouse chain said total sales for the four weeks ended Nov. 29 rose 12.9 percent, to $564.7 million from $499.9 million last year.

BJ's said same-store food sales improved by about 11 percent for November and general merchandise same-store sales increased 2 percent, resulting in total merchandise same-store sales growth of 6.7 percent. Comparable-store sales increased in all major markets, particularly in the Southeast.

According to BJ's, categories with the highest sales growth included baby foods, dairy, health and beauty aids, household chemicals, fresh meat, prepared foods, prerecorded media, produce, and water. Among the weaker segments were automotive, cigarettes, electronics, giftware, jewelry, and office supplies.

For the 43 weeks of the year to date, BJ's posted a same-store sales increase of 8 percent, while total sales rose 15.6 percent to $5.26 billion from $4.55 billion a year earlier.
