Bruno's CEO Resigns Amid New Reorganization
AMSTERDAM - Dutch retail giant Royal Ahold NV Wednesday said the chief executive of its U.S. supermarket chain Bruno's has resigned amid its latest restructuring, Dow Jones news wires reports.
Ahold said that chief executive Jim Demme of Bruno's supermarkets, one of the chains involved in the company?s restructuring, has decided to leave the company to pursue other interests.
Ahold on Wednesday announced that four of its six U.S. retail companies are further restructuring their back-office operations. Giant-Carlisle and Tops will pursue further integration of their merchandising and administrative functions, accelerating a process that began two years ago with the announcement of a shared services' arrangement between the two companies. BI-LO and Bruno's are just beginning the process of restructuring selected business and administrative functions.
The chief executive of Bi-Lo, Dean Cohagan, will lead the reorganization and will also head Bruno's following the resignation of its CEO. Bruce Efird has been promoted to executive VP and general manager of Bruno's and will lead the day-to-day operations of the Bruno's business.
Ahold spokesman Nick Gale said it's better that one person is in charge of the restructuring and that Demme himself decided to step down as CEO of Bruno's.
Bruno's was Ahold's last big acquisition of a supermarket chain in the U.S., completed in December 2001.
The restructuring for Giant Food Stores and Tops, however, won't be led by one manager, but will be co-led by the CEO's of each chain.
Ahold's two biggest U.S.-based chains, Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover, aren't taking part in this reorganization.
