Cub Foods Customers, Local Hockey Stars Go 'Wild' In Aisles

STILLWATER, Minn. -- The Cub Foods grocery store in St. Paul's Midway Shopping Center turned "Wild in the Aisles" as Minnesota Wild hockey players and Cub Foods customers teamed up for Second Harvest Heartland Food Bank.

Three teams raced through the grocery aisles, hurling massive amounts of food into their carts. Together the teams amassed $6,577.83 in groceries. Cub Foods kicked in another $2,500, for a total donation amount of $9,077.83 to Second Harvest.

In the five-minute power play, Minnesota Wild defenseman Nick Schultz and Plymouth resident Leslie Lee carted $2,726.27 in groceries. The pair handily edged out St. Paul resident Tim Prehn and his teammate, former Wild player and seven-time team captain and current director of community partnerships, Brad Bombardir, who gathered $2,508.52 in groceries. Third place went to Ryan Bell from Maplewood and his teammate, defenseman Kurtis Foster, whose team grabbed $1,291.56 in groceries.

"When we were young, my sister and I used to watch the show 'Supermarket Sweep,'" said contestant Leslie Lee. "My family and I cased the aisles this weekend and worked out a strategy, and having Nick as a partner was great because he's done this before. I'm surprised by how much money we actually raised for Second Harvest."

Lee, the grand-prize winner, was awarded a $500 Cub Foods gift certificate, a Minnesota Wild jersey, and four tickets to a Minnesota Wild hockey game. Prehn and Bell received $250 and $100 Cub Foods gift certificates, respectively, a Minnesota Wild jersey and four tickets to a Minnesota Wild hockey game. Contestants were chosen at random from an in-store drawing involving all 56 Twin Cities Cub Foods stores.

Established in 1968 as one of the nation's first discount grocery stores, Cub Foods was purchased in 1980 by Supervalu and currently operates 56 stores in the Twin Cities.
