EPA Names Food Lion Energy Star 2002 Partner of the Year

SALISBURY, N.C. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named Food Lion an Energy Star "Partner of the Year" for its outstanding energy use management and pollution prevention efforts throughout its organization. Food Lion will be recognized at a 10th Anniversary awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on March 26, 2002.

"EPA is proud to recognize Food Lion's leadership with an Energy Star award," said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA's climate protection partnership division. "They prove commitment, measurement, and strategic investment help the environment as well as their business objectives."

An Energy Star partner since 1998, Food Lion is being honored for incorporating strategic energy management into its business plan, thereby protecting the environment and strengthening its bottom line. In 2001, Food Lion greatly reduced its energy consumption by upgrading and refining its stores' lighting, heating and cooling systems. Even though the supermarket chain added new stores and increased its square footage by approximately 3 percent, Food Lion's total energy consumption dropped by more than 106 billion Btu.

"At Food Lion, we work hard to prevent pollution and save energy by installing energy-efficient lighting, HVAC and refrigeration equipment. Each new and remodeled Food Lion store is among the most energy efficient supermarkets in the industry," explained Rick Heithold, Food Lion's corporate energy manager. "Food Lion's corporate energy mission is to become a world-class leader in energy management in the supermarket industry."

Food Lion's current store design saves more than 86,000 kilowatt-hours per year -- enough to power eight homes for an entire year. The energy savings at each store also prevent 127,400 pounds of CO2 emissions per year, equal to removing the pollution of 12 cars or planting nearly 18 acres of trees.

Food Lion LLC is a subsidiary of Delhaize America, the U.S. division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group. The company operates more than 1,200 stores in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
