Farmer Jack Closing Lansing Stores

DETROIT - A&P's Farmer Jack division this week informed employees in its Lansing, Michigan stores that both stores will close by mid-February.

"Closing stores is always a difficult decision because of the impact on our customers and our employees," said Mike Carter, president of Farmer Jack. "It's unfortunate, but Farmer Jack's current financial performance requires us to close the Lansing stores at this time." Officials did not say if the company plans to close additional stores.

In October, Farmer Jack outlined the need to lower overall costs to return to profitability.

The company said it plans to work with all state and local agencies on job placement and training programs for the employees.

Farmer Jack Food Market is southeast Michigan's market leader with 106 locations. Based in Detroit, Farmer Jack is an operating unit of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company headquartered in Montvale, N.J.
