Five Supermarkets Make Fortune '100 Best Companies to Work for' List

NEW YORK - Five supermarket companies made the 2003 list of "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" published annually by Fortune magazine. They are: Wegmans Food Markets (No. 10), Stew Leonard's (No. 30), Whole Foods Market (No. 32); Ukrop's Super Markets (No. 71), and Publix Super Markets (No. 87).

"We are thrilled to be named to Fortune's '100 Best Companies to Work For' list for the second year in a row," said Stew Leonard Jr., president and CEO. "What makes Stew Leonard's a great place to work is the family-like caring atmosphere among our Team Members, and that translates to every customer feeling special and welcomed the moment they walk in one of our stores.

"Having a great place to work is a day-to-day job. It's also a job that you can't delegate. It's all about listening, caring and being considerate of the people you work with. My job and the job of our management team is to create that environment and we're not nearly finished," he said.

To select the list, Fortune surveyed a random sample of employees from 269 candidate companies--more than 1,000 firms were considered--to get their opinions about their workplaces. A total of 40,713 employees responded to the survey (the Great Place to Work Trust Index, an instrument created by the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco). Nearly half gave additional written comments. Each of the companies was also asked to fill out a questionnaire describing its HR policies and workplace culture.

In scoring the responses, Fortune said it placed the greatest weight on the employee responses (two-thirds of the total), with the remainder being its evaluation of the company's benefits and practices.
