Food Lion Donates Money for Playroom in New Children's Hospital
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion donated $250,000 to Johns Hopkins Children's Center last week to help the medical program build an inpatient playroom on the oncology unit of a new children's hospital, slated for groundbreaking in early 2006.
"This generous donation from Food Lion will make a tremendous difference to the pediatric patients who spend time at the Children's Center while receiving treatment for cancer," said George Dover, M.D., director and pediatrician-in-chief of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, in a statement. "Medical insurance doesn't pay for things like playrooms. We thank Food Lion for a gift that will mean so much to the kids."
Food Lion executives presented the donation to Dover and pediatric oncology director Robert Arceci, M.D., during a luncheon and visit to the Children's Center.

"We are thankful the Johns Hopkins Children's Center is here to help children get well and reach their full potential. Part of a major redevelopment project of the East Baltimore campus of the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus, ground will be broken in late spring for a new, 570,000-square-foot children's hospital. The new hospital will feature 205 single-patient rooms, state of the art pediatric diagnostic, medical and surgical facilities, and play and entertainment spaces for children and their families. The new children's hospital is anticipated to open in 2009.
Food Lion LLC is a subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group. Its 1,300 supermarkets are located in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
